Feb. Meeting Review - Audio Software Shootout

SoCal Pros Feb17 Tim Keenan Joe McNeil Brian PageOur monthly meeting on February 15, 2017, was a big hit with the audience. MC Brian Page (himself a VO artist, actor and sound designer—seen on the right of the photo) added his two cents to the valuable insights of experts, Tim Keenan, of Creative Media Recording in Cypress (on the left) and Joe McNeil of Marktree Productions (in the center.) While both highly respected engineers had lots to say about a wide variety of audio software, their stories and experiences were what captured the most attention.

The trio covered all of the most popular programs including Adobe Audition, Apple's Logic Pro X and Avid's ProTools, mentioning prices and capabilities of each. For these engineers it was largely a matter of personal preference between these high-end products and the advice was pick something and learn it very well. They also covered Sound Forge's Audio Studio 10 ($60) and Sound Forge Pro ($400)

The three experts answered many questions for the audience including a little toubleshooting. And as the SoCal Media Pros meetings are mostly attended by working professionals, a few audience members who are experts in different areas shared their experience as well. There was plenty of good-hearted humor in the interactive banter.SoCal Pros Feb17 Larry Stimson Records

The panel pointed out that many of the most popular audio software products have a free trial version to check out. Most of these will have some limited aspects of the functions available in the full version.

They also went into less comprehensive software applications such as Twisted Wave and Wave Pad and touched on the most popular Freeware systems such as Audacity and Cool Edit Pro.

One of the last pieces of advice was that there are many other editing platforms out there, finding out which one is good for you requires some knowing what you want and then some experimentation to discover what’s best for you.
