Many OC Members Participate

Quite a few members of the MCA-I Orange County Chapter and others from up north ventured across the vast plains of Camp Pendleton to enjoy the San Diego Chapter’s monthly meeting on October 26th  in Carlsbad.

It was a large crowd and took up most of the space in the main studio of JM Digital Works the in-house production company for Jazzercise and the host for the evening.

Three experienced Directors of Photography shared their best tricks and tips for creating theirs—and others—favorite looks. Mike Kurtz well known DP in San Diego area, Orange County’s own Ken Garff, of In 24P based in Santa Ana, ( and current president of the American Society of Cinematographers, ( Daryn Okada, were the three featured speakers.  Thanks to a large screen and live XDCAMHD camcorder provide by SONY everyone enjoyed the demonstrations of diffusion and gradation filters including the orange sky used so often on CSI:Miami.  Other discussions (including some great Q&A) included the Pro 35 adapter, film lenses, depth of field, electronic detailing, post production tricks, tricks on getting motion into the shot on a low budget with a wheelchair or flat dolly and a beanbag, color and the use of warming cards to set the white balance in the camera.

Before the main panel was seated an impressive demonstration of a new Ulti-matte process created with Reflecmedia’s Chroma Key Solution that is fast and very portable was given courtesy of Bogen Imaging rep for So. Cal., Karla Walters.

And of course, there was some good power-networking going on both before and after the presentations.

The evening’s very welcoming MCs were Chapter President, Mark Schultze, and current MCAI International President, Connie Terwilliger, who is based in San Diego. Like the LA/Orange County Chapter, the MCA-I San Diego Chapter usually holds its meetings on the third Wednesday evening
of every month.  And like us they love visitors--and members from other chapters--to drop in.  Check out their activities online at  As you will at all MCA-I chapters, you’ll meet some
great professionals in San Diego—and an inviting atmosphere in which to do business.
