MEETING REVIEW: BlackMagic's Van Tour, Jan 2018

SoCal Media Pros was First Stop On National Tour!

BMD van

On the last day of January SoCal Media Pros welcomed the Blackmagic Design's "Tech On Wheels" van to the Digital Media Center in Santa Ana. Our first official gathering of the year was an al fresco delight --if you're into video technology!

BMD Van and friends 1Blackmagic Design's Mark Thompson only took a few minutes to park, drop the awning and power up the van's inside working display. Then he was ready to answer questions and give demos. And, wow, what a great compact demo on wheels that van is! It looks like an electronic lounge. With the efficient placement of every piece of gear it was like a small live remote broadcast truck. On display were cameras, switchers, routers, converters and more.

BMD product tableOutside, overseen by Mark Sambrano of Key Code Media (the folks who sell and install Blackmagic equipment) was a table display of some of the famous Blackmagic gear. The Blackmagic reputation--well earned--is that of making a better widget for a much less price…and widgets that really work!

With an 'open-house" format the BMD folks were on site for only a 4 hour window. Many pros arrived, rotated through and hung out to talk. It never got backed up or over crowded but there was always a group coalesced around the van.

Two great thinJ.Coleman w Mark Thompson3gs that everybody loved during the 'Tech On Wheels" van's 4 hour stop at the Digital Media Center were the ability to get questions answered by knowledgeable experts and the hands-on opportunity to play with their products. Particularly popular was the Blackmagic URSA camera.

You may not know it but Blackmagic's DaVinci Resolve 14 is both a powerful non-linear editing system and what many consider the best color correction and grading system in video. Mark Thompson took us through all the pages and mentioned that you can actually get it all free! Of course if you want the top-line professional gadgets that's a different story. But what a great introduction to this powerful NLE! So much better than the try-it-for-60 days routine from others!

So, while the Blackmagic "Tech On Wheels" Van Tour is now headed to other cities throughout the year (did I hear Phoenix was the next stop…or was it Albuquerque?) the SoCal Media Pros had a great start for 2018: a lot of good info; some very cool toys to play with and a little networking — all thanks to Blackmagic Designs and KeyCode Media!IMG 8332
