Master editor-trainer, Larry Jordan and award winning cinematographer-producer, Steven Douglas, both authors and well-known media personalities, were the keynote speakers for MCA-i San Diego Chapter's 2nd annual MediaProCamp on February 19th. The guru duo was a perfect closing act to a day of cutting edge roundtables, discussions and networking.
The crowd was almost at capacity since word had spread about the successful event last year. Besides the local pros who came to collaborate, MCA-i International President, Gary Shifflet, (at center in photo at right) flew in from the Detroit Chapter to experience his very first MediaProCamp. 2011 is the year that MCA-i's MediaProCamp goes national. Joining San Diego, the Detroit, Central Carolina and LA/OC chapters will all be holding events later this year. Eight or so members of the LA/Orange County Chapter participated as well.
MediaProCamp, sponsored in 2011 by Panasonic, is an all day gathering of media pros engaging in multultiple series of roundtable discussions on any subjects the participants choose. The format is intensely productive and provides for fabulous networking. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join in. The San Diego chapter offered the event Free and even included a courtesy lunch. A delicious lunch was provided courtesy of Stock3DR.com who raffled off 2 volumes of HD stock footage worth $1,000 each!
The OC members, whose chapter inaugurated MediaProCamp two years ago, knew that every event generates totally different topics and the results are spontaneous. This event was no different. The organizers had room for up to 5 separate discussion groups simultaneously scheduled into 4 sessions—two before lunch and two after.
Some topics covered were tech oriented such as: What Camera to Buy; Advanced Edit Techniques for FCP and Solving Multi-Format Video Issues. Others were more business directed such as: How To Avoid Selling On Price; Monitizing On-Line Video and the tag-team of media production, The Brothers Winn, with What We Wish We Had Known About Pitching A TV Series --Before hand!
California Arts Institute, San Diego again donated space for the hoard of professional campers to use, including editing labs, classrooms and the dining hall/cafe. They also provided a great tour of their impressive audio production facilities.
As a wrap-up, the team of Larry Jordan and Steve Douglas discussed future trends in video production and the industry via an entertaining and creative debate. The two friends brought differing perspectives and opinion all to the benefit of the enthralled campers.
