There is a book in the Bible called “Job.” It’s about a man who loves God but is also allowed by God to be tormented, tortured and tested by the Devil. He loses all his wealth, his home is destroyed and his body is racked by every sickness and malady imaginable. -- Sounds like great material for a comedy, right? Well, at Newport Theater Arts Center in Newport Beach that’s exactly what you get with a play called “God’s Favorite” by Neil Simon.
MCAi’s Brian Page (our current Chapter President) heads the cast. “It’s a great ensemble piece, and we’ve got a very talented cast,” he told us while eschewing the use of the term ‘Starring” for himself. However, one of the people who saw an early performance reported that Page is on stage in almost every scene!
Brian plays “Joe,” a takeoff on the original Job. Neil Simon puts Page’s Joe through all manner of distress, each funnier that the last. While dealing with his own anger and frustration, Joe has to deal with his wacky family and Sidney, the goofy, so-called messenger of God. It’s the kind of hilarious comedy that made Neil Simon famous.
Page is an OC-based professional actor and voice-over artist, lending his talents to many commercials, narration, e-learning and telephony projects. For nearly 20 years he’s applied his acting talents to the stage, having performed in more than 60 productions. “This has been a wonderful experience” says Page, “its always great fun getting a chance to perform in a Neil Simon play”. He’s performed in many different types of plays, including comedies, dramas, thrillers and even earlier this year a stint as Gandalf in the stage version of “The Hobbit”.
